Energy In Motion (EIM) has inaugurated its second heavy-duty battery swapping-cum-charging station at the Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal (NSDT) under the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). The facility is part of a planned EV Megaplex aimed at accelerating electric freight operations at JNPT.

The development comes as JNPA targets a complete energy transition by December 2027.

EV Megaplex to Support 700+ Electric Trucks

EIM said around 150 electric trucks are currently operating within JNPA, while its first E5 battery swapping station has already reached its operational capacity.

The planned EV Megaplex will support the expansion of electric heavy-duty vehicles across key port and freight corridors, with infrastructure designed to eventually cater to more than 700 electric trucks.

Key facilities planned at the EV Megaplex:

  • Three battery swap-cum-charging stations
  • Dedicated heavy-vehicle service station
  • Driver training centre
  • Heavy-vehicle simulator
  • Integrated energy and freight operations

Faster Turnaround for Electric Freight

Battery swapping is expected to reduce vehicle downtime compared with conventional charging, helping electric trucks maintain high utilisation in demanding freight operations.

EIM is also expanding electric freight movements beyond dedicated port operations to include container freight station (CFS) movements. The company is working with JNPA, terminal operators and logistics providers to integrate EVs into these operations.

Smart Fleet Management to Boost Uptime

EIM is deploying slot-booking and slot-optimisation systems to manage electric trucks within the high-throughput port environment.

The EV Megaplex is expected to bring together charging and swapping infrastructure, vehicle servicing, driver training and freight operations, supporting JNPA’s goal of transitioning towards cleaner and more efficient port logistics by 2027.
