India’s freight transport sector is witnessing a significant shift towards electrification. UltraTech Cement has deployed 45 electric heavy-duty trucks in partnership with Energy In Motion (EIM), marking one of the largest electric trucking deployments in the cement industry in northern India.
The initiative will support clinker transportation from UltraTech’s Kotputli Cement Works in Rajasthan to its grinding units in Dadri and Sikandarabad, covering a 250-kilometre route across three states.
Taking Electric Freight Beyond Pilot Projects
Heavy-duty trucking has long been considered one of the most challenging segments to electrify due to payload demands and operational requirements.
Key highlights of the deployment include:
- 45 electric heavy-duty trucks
- 55-tonne payload capacity per vehicle
- 250-km operating corridor
- Operations across Rajasthan, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh
- Partnership with Energy In Motion (EIM)
The project demonstrates how electric trucking is gradually moving towards large-scale commercial deployment.
Delivering Real Environmental Impact
The fleet is expected to generate substantial sustainability benefits.
According to UltraTech, the deployment will:
- Reduce more than 8,900 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually
- Replace approximately 2.9 million litres of diesel consumption each year
- Support the company’s broader decarbonisation strategy
The initiative also strengthens UltraTech’s growing green logistics ecosystem, which already includes CNG, LNG, and electric vehicles.
Why The Industry Is Watching Closely
The significance of this deployment extends beyond the cement sector.
It highlights:
- Growing confidence in electric freight
- Increasing commercial viability of heavy-duty EVs
- Rising focus on industrial decarbonisation
- Expanding adoption of sustainable logistics solutions
As industries seek to reduce transport-related emissions, electric trucks are becoming a viable option for long-haul and industrial freight applications.
Looking Ahead
UltraTech’s latest deployment signals that heavy-duty electrification is gaining momentum in India. As battery technology, charging infrastructure, and fleet economics improve, electric freight could become a critical pillar of industrial sustainability and clean mobility.
