Tata.CARS has introduced DrivePay, an in-car fuel payment solution powered by ToneTag, allowing connected vehicle users to pay for fuel directly through their vehicle interface. The technology was unveiled at Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in collaboration with IndianOil.
Fuel Payments Without a Phone or Card
DrivePay is designed to simplify the refuelling experience by allowing users to complete payments from the vehicle after refuelling.
Unlike conventional fuel payments, the system does not require a separate mobile app, physical card or another payment device.
Key highlights include:
- In-car fuel payment through the vehicle interface
- Powered by ToneTag’s IoT payment technology
- Built using NPCI’s UPI Circle framework
- Developed in collaboration with IndianOil
- Integration with IndianOil’s XTRAREWARDS loyalty programme
- Reward points can be earned without sharing a mobile number during the transaction
How DrivePay Works
The solution uses an IoT-enabled implementation of NPCI’s UPI Circle framework, which supports the integration of IoT devices and software into the UPI ecosystem.
ToneTag provides the technology layer that connects the vehicle with the digital payment infrastructure, turning the connected car itself into a payment interface.
IndianOil Network to Support Deployment
Following its GFF 2026 launch, DrivePay is being deployed at IndianOil retail outlets, with a formal rollout expected in the coming months.
The collaboration brings together IndianOil’s extensive fuel network, Tata.CARS’ connected vehicle ecosystem, ToneTag’s payment technology and NPCI’s digital payment infrastructure.
A Step Toward Connected-Car Commerce
ToneTag plans to explore similar applications with other automotive OEMs and mobility companies. The technology could eventually support wider in-vehicle payments, commerce and digital services, making connected vehicles more than just a means of transportation.
DrivePay represents another step toward a future where cars can act as digital payment and service platforms.
