Mahindra Unveils State-of-the-Art EV Manufacturing Facility at Chakan

Mahindra's New Chakan Facility

January 9th, 2025

Mahindra & Mahindra has taken a bold step in India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution by launching an advanced EV manufacturing facility at Chakan, near Pune. This facility will produce Mahindra’s new Born Electric SUVs, the BE 6e and XEV 9e, and sets a high standard for innovation and sustainability in EV production.

Mahindra allocated ₹4,500 crore from its ₹16,000 crore EV budget (FY2022–2027) to establish this plant. By combining cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices, the company aims to meet the growing demand for EVs while advancing its vision of a greener future.

Key Features of the Facility

Mahindra designed the Chakan plant to incorporate state-of-the-art infrastructure, making it one of the most advanced EV manufacturing facilities in India.

  • Production Capacity: The plant can initially produce 90,000 units annually. Mahindra plans to scale this capacity to 1.2 lakh units as demand increases.
  • Advanced Robotics: Over 1,000 robots, including 500 AI-driven robots, enhance precision and speed, particularly in the body shop.
  • IoT Integration: The facility uses a centralized IoT-based Nerve Center, which enables real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance to improve efficiency.

A Sustainability-Centric Approach

Mahindra actively incorporates eco-friendly practices in its Chakan plant to align with India’s COP26 goals.

  • The facility operates entirely on renewable energy, significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
  • It follows water-positive practices, conserving water and ensuring sustainability in production processes.
  • A highly automated battery assembly line produces compact and efficient batteries, rigorously tested to meet global standards for safety and reliability.

Born Electric SUVs: BE 6e and XEV 9e

Mahindra plans to manufacture its Born Electric SUVs at this facility to cater to India’s growing EV market.

  • The BE 6e, priced at ₹18.90 lakh (ex-showroom), delivers an impressive 682 km range per charge.
  • The XEV 9e, priced at ₹21.90 lakh (ex-showroom), offers a 656 km range, making it ideal for long-distance travel.
  • Deliveries for both models will begin in February-March 2025, enabling Mahindra to address consumer demand for affordable, long-range EVs.

These SUVs promise to meet the needs of eco-conscious urban and suburban travelers while offering high performance and competitive pricing.

Driving India’s Electric Mobility Vision

Mahindra demonstrates its commitment to electric mobility and sustainability by investing in this state-of-the-art facility. The Chakan plant strengthens the company’s ability to lead India’s EV market while supporting its ambition to achieve carbon neutrality.

This facility not only underscores Mahindra’s leadership in innovation but also reinforces India’s reputation as a hub for advanced, sustainable manufacturing. The company’s efforts reflect its long-term strategy to redefine transportation with environmentally friendly practices and cutting-edge technology.
