Karnataka to lead EV infrastructure expansion under national mission

Karnataka has announced an ambitious plan to set up 1,500 high-capacity electric vehicle (EV) charging stations under the PM e-Drive scheme. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s EV ecosystem and reduce range anxiety by enhancing nationwide charging access. The move will involve collaboration between state agencies, utilities, and private sector partners to deliver efficient, grid-integrated charging solutions.

The project supports India’s broader electric mobility transition by building resilient charging networks for both private and commercial EV users. Each station will be equipped to handle multiple vehicle types, including electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and heavy-duty vehicles.

Focus on fast, reliable, and inclusive charging network

Karnataka’s initiative reflects the growing urgency to scale EV infrastructure alongside rising adoption rates. By prioritizing high-capacity charging stations, the state is focusing on faster turnaround times, improved uptime, and technology compatibility. The deployment is also expected to promote local manufacturing of chargers, drive ancillary industry growth, and enhance the state’s clean-tech supply chain.

Supporting India’s clean mobility and energy goals

The PM e-Drive scheme forms part of India’s national mission to accelerate EV adoption and reduce fossil fuel dependency. Karnataka, already home to several EV OEMs and battery innovators, is expected to leverage this network to support both passenger and commercial fleets. The initiative also contributes to India’s net-zero emissions roadmap and its target of achieving 30% EV penetration by 2030.
