Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has recorded a sharp rise in electric vehicle (EV) penetration, reaching around 25% this year, even as demand remains significantly higher than available supply.

EV Demand Outpaces Available Supply

According to Managing Director Shailesh Chandra, Tata Motors’ EV penetration has increased from around 14% last year to approximately 25% currently. He said booking demand could have pushed penetration beyond 30% if sufficient vehicle supply was available.

The company’s EV sales reached a record 16,549 units in August, while January-August sales stood at 93,164 units, already exceeding the 81,125 units sold during the whole of 2025.

Production Capacity Doubles

Tata Motors has significantly increased its monthly EV production capacity to address rising demand.

  • Current monthly capacity: More than 16,000 EVs
  • Last year’s average capacity: 7,500-8,000 units per month
  • August EV sales: 16,549 units
  • January-August 2026 sales: 93,164 units

Chandra said the supply constraint is largely linked to suppliers expanding their production capacity rather than limitations within Tata Motors’ own manufacturing facilities.

Industry EV Adoption Also Accelerates

Chandra said overall EV penetration in India’s passenger vehicle industry has risen from around 4.5% to 8%, with the segment potentially reaching double-digit penetration in the next financial year.

Higher fuel prices amid geopolitical uncertainty have supported EV adoption, while improvements in range, charging speeds and charging infrastructure are also strengthening consumer confidence.

Tata Motors Leads Mainstream EV Portfolio

Tata Motors currently has one of the largest mainstream EV portfolios in India, spanning seven models.

These include the Tiago EV, Nexon EV, Punch EV, Harrier EV, Curvv EV, Tigor EV/Xpres-T for fleet buyers, and Sierra EV.

With demand continuing to outpace supply, Tata Motors is working to increase EV production capacity further in the coming months.
