Bajaj Auto’s Ambitious Plans for Clean Energy Vehicles

Bajaj Auto is making significant strides in the clean energy vehicle sector with a series of upcoming launches and initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.

Bajaj Auto is set to introduce a range of clean energy vehicles, including:

CNG-Powered Motorcycle: The company recently launched the Freedom 125, the world’s first CNG-powered motorcycle. This bike features a 2-kg CNG tank and a 2-litre petrol tank, offering a range of up to 330 km.

Ethanol-Powered Vehicles: Next month, Bajaj Auto plans to showcase ethanol-powered motorcycles and three-wheelers, which are expected to hit the market in FY25.

Electric Scooters: Bajaj Auto will also expand its electric scooter lineup this fiscal year, introducing both affordable and premium models. A new Chetak platform is anticipated early next year.

Sales Targets and Market Share

Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, has set an ambitious target of achieving 100,000 monthly sales of clean energy vehicles by the festive season1. The company currently holds an 18% market share in the electric two-wheeler segment with its Chetak e-scooter and leads the electric three-wheeler segment with a 36% market share.

Advocacy for GST Reduction

Rajiv Bajaj has been vocal about the need to reduce GST on CNG motorcycles. He argues that if electric vehicles are taxed at 5%, CNG vehicles, which are also relatively cleaner, should not be taxed at 28%.

Future Plans

Bajaj Auto’s future plans include launching an e-rickshaw next financial year and continuing to innovate in the clean energy vehicle space. The company’s EV business is already profitable, and it aims to further increase its market share in the coming years.
