Hyundai Motor Group has officially launched the Hyundai Center of Excellence (Hyundai CoE) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to advance clean and smart mobility technologies. The center will focus on electrification and battery systems, crucial components for the growing electric vehicle (EV) market.
The official agreement ceremony in New Delhi was attended by key figures from both Hyundai and IIT Delhi. Hyundai’s delegation included Heuiwon Yang, President and Head of the R&D Division; Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India; and Chang Hwan Kim, Executive Vice President of the Electrification Energy Solutions Tech Unit. From IIT Delhi, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, and Deans Manu Santhanam (IIT Madras) and Sachin C. Patwardhan (IIT Bombay) participated, emphasizing the importance of this collaboration.
The Hyundai CoE at IIT Delhi will spearhead research into nine joint projects with IITs across India, aimed at advancing battery technologies. These projects will focus on areas like battery cell design, management systems, energy density, safety, and long-term durability. Additionally, researchers will work on developing diagnostic tools and exploring advanced materials to further improve battery performance and efficiency.
This collaboration is part of Hyundai’s larger strategy to drive innovation in the EV space. The company is expanding its Future Technology Research Program, which was launched in 2021, to include Indian academic institutions. The program invites university professors to propose research topics, which are then evaluated and selected by Hyundai, allowing for a more flexible and inclusive approach to academic-industrial collaboration.
The Hyundai CoE at IIT Delhi marks the beginning of a broader initiative to establish similar centers across India. These centers will connect top researchers and institutions nationwide, accelerating the development of sustainable mobility solutions. By partnering with India’s leading academic institutions, Hyundai is investing in the future of electric vehicles and contributing to India’s clean energy goals.
This partnership underscores Hyundai’s commitment to innovation in EV battery technology and electrification systems. As the world moves toward more sustainable transportation solutions, Hyundai’s research and collaborations will play a vital role in shaping the future of mobility.
