Karnataka has highest number of EV charging stations in Country

Karnataka has emerged as the leader in India's electric vehicle (EV) revolution, boasting the highest number of public electric vehicle charging stations (PEVCS) in the country. The state has 5,765 PEVCS, with Bengaluru Urban alone accounting for 4,462 of these stations.

This significant achievement has been attributed to the state’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy, as well as its pioneering EV policy introduced in 2017 and bolstered with incentives in 2021.

The energy department is working towards developing model EV cities across Karnataka to further promote sustainable transportation. Energy Minister KJ George highlighted Karnataka’s benchmark in the nation with 5,765 PEVCS, emphasizing the state’s efforts to build a robust EV infrastructure. The funding for these charging stations comes from various sources, including the Union government’s FAME scheme, Bescom’s investments, green cess funds, and public-private partnerships. The state government also proposed in the February 2024 budget to establish nearly 2,500 new EV charging stations across the state under the public-private partnership model, with a planned investment of Rs 35 crore for setting up 100 charging centers in collaboration with power supply companies.
