From Vision to Vehicles: The Journey of Arjun Madra and GEV

Volume 1 Issue 13

In the evolving landscape of India’s electric mobility sector, few journeys capture grassroots innovation like that of Arjun Madra, Founder of GEV

A Global Beginning, A Local Vision

Born in Durgapur and raised in Noida, Arjun Madra pursued his education at Amity University before moving to Australia for a double master’s degree. While he built a comfortable life abroad, his entrepreneurial instincts pulled him back to India.

“I was always more inclined towards generating jobs instead of doing one.”

During a visit home, he began exploring the EV space – an industry still in its early stages. What he saw wasn’t chaos, but opportunity.

“I started looking for options with a grand vision… something that could create a real impact on the Indian market.”

Entering an Uncharted Industry

When Arjun returned in 2016, India’s EV ecosystem lacked structure, awareness, and reliable knowledge – especially in the e-rickshaw segment.

Despite not coming from a technical background, he moved forward with conviction.

“Passion doesn’t need a degree… if you can’t do something, hire the best person to do it.”

Instead of focusing only on engineering, he focused on people – drivers, fleet operators, and small entrepreneurs.

“Success in EV is not just about engineering – it’s about solving real livelihood problems at scale.”

Building from the Ground Up

The early days of GEV were hands-on and deeply rooted in fieldwork. With a small team, Arjun personally sold vehicles, gathered feedback, and refined the product.

“I spent a lot of time on the field… understanding what really helps riders benefit.”

This approach helped shape GEV into more than a manufacturer, it became a real solution provider for India’s last-mile economy.

Turning Challenges into Advantage

Starting young in an unstructured and technical industry came with its own challenges – from sourcing components to understanding battery systems.

But the absence of a roadmap became an advantage.

“There were no playbooks… it forced me to learn directly from the ground.”

Moments of doubt were inevitable, but they became part of the process.

“If your vision is strong and rooted in real impact, doubt doesn’t stop you – it sharpens you.”

A Decade of Impact

Today, as GEV completes 10 years, its growth reflects both scale and purpose:

  • Over 20,000 electric vehicles sold
  • A 100+ strong dealer network across India along proactive after sales support
  • Thousands of livelihoods empowered

For Arjun, however, numbers are only part of the story.

“Each vehicle represents a livelihood, a family, a daily income – that’s what truly brings me joy.”

Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Arjun’s journey offers a clear lesson: you don’t need perfect knowledge to begin.

“You don’t need to have all the answers, you need clarity on the problem you want to solve.”

By staying close to the customer and building the right team, he turned limitations into strengths.

“Don’t let your background limit your ambition.”

Looking Ahead

At its core, the story of GEV is about impact. With innovations like India’s first 7+1 electric auto, we are trying to support the riders by providing best possible solutions for unit economics.

“We don’t just build EVs; we build solutions that improve livelihoods.”

As India accelerates toward clean mobility, Arjun Madra hopes his journey will be remembered not just for innovation – but for enabling opportunity at scale.
