Tesla India launch

February 19th, 2025

Tesla is gearing up for its India debut this April, with plans to introduce an electric vehicle priced under ₹21 lakh. The American automaker has already identified prime locations for its showrooms in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex and Delhi’s Aerocity.

Strategic Retail Presence

The company has chosen premium locations near both cities’ airports for its approximately 5,000-square-foot showrooms. These areas, known for hosting global corporations and luxury retail, signal Tesla’s positioning in the Indian market.

The Delhi showroom will be situated in Aerocity, a bustling commercial hub, while the Mumbai location will be in the prestigious BKC business district. These carefully selected venues suggest Tesla’s focus on establishing a strong brand presence.

Market Entry Strategy

Initially, Tesla plans to import vehicles from its Berlin plant. While local manufacturing isn’t yet confirmed, the company aims to increase its engagement with Indian suppliers. Sources indicate Tesla’s component sourcing from Indian OEM suppliers could exceed $1 billion by 2025.

Building Local Presence

The company has already started recruiting for its India operations, posting 13 mid-level positions. These roles include store managers and customer relationship specialists, indicating Tesla’s commitment to building a robust local team.

Price Positioning

Tesla’s planned entry-level model for India, priced under ₹21 lakh, shows careful consideration of the market’s price sensitivity. This strategic pricing could help Tesla compete effectively in India’s growing electric vehicle segment.

The company’s India plans follow recent policy changes that reduced import duties on luxury EVs. This shift addresses one of Tesla’s long-standing concerns about entering the Indian market.

Tesla’s measured approach to its India entry, with focus on premium locations and strategic pricing, suggests the company is serious about establishing a strong presence in the world’s third-largest auto market.
