Hindalco Industries, Aditya Birla Group’s metals arm, unveiled a ₹21,000 crore investment to expand its Sambalpur smelter by 3.6 lakh tonnes per annum. The company commissioned India’s first battery-grade aluminium foil facility within a new ₹4,500 crore Flat Rolled Products (FRP) plant. This supports up to 100 GWh of domestic lithium-ion cell production for EVs and energy storage.
Capacity and Tech Upgrades
The FRP facility reaches 1.7 lakh TPA output, including direct high-purity foil for pouch cells. Hindalco secures over 50% domestic flat-rolled aluminium market share, halving India’s 40% import dependence. Renewable energy integration enhances sustainability.
Economic and Sector Impact
The expansion generates 15,000 direct and indirect jobs in Odisha, positioning it as India’s aluminium capital. MD Satish Pai emphasized upstream-downstream synergy for EV, defence, and renewables demand. It aligns with self-reliance goals amid rising cell giga factories.
