Maharashtra Boosts EV Adoption with Toll Waivers on Major Expressways

Greaves Electric Mobility

Maharashtra Roads and Bridges

Mumbai – In a landmark decision aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, the Maharashtra government has announced a complete toll exemption for EVs on some of the state’s most critical expressways. As of August 22, 2025, owners of electric cars and buses can enjoy toll-free travel on the iconic Atal Setu, the bustling Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and the expansive Samruddhi Mahamarg.

This move is a key component of the state’s progressive Electric Vehicle Policy and is designed to provide a direct and tangible financial benefit to EV users. By eliminating toll charges, the government is effectively reducing the operational costs associated with owning an electric vehicle, making them an even more attractive proposition for both private car owners and public transport operators. This incentive is expected to play a significant role in encouraging more consumers to make the switch from conventional fossil fuel-powered vehicles to cleaner, greener alternatives.

The policy is not just about providing a financial incentive; it is a strategic step towards achieving Maharashtra’s ambitious environmental goals. The transport sector is a major contributor to air pollution in the state’s urban centers, and promoting the use of zero-emission vehicles is a critical part of the government’s clean air strategy. By making EV travel more convenient and cost-effective, the state aims to increase the number of electric vehicles on its roads, which will lead to a direct reduction in harmful emissions and an improvement in overall air quality.

Furthermore, the toll exemption is part of a broader, holistic approach to building a robust EV ecosystem in Maharashtra. The government is also investing heavily in the development of charging infrastructure along these expressways and across the state, addressing the issue of range anxiety, which has been a major concern for potential EV buyers. With these comprehensive measures, Maharashtra is not just encouraging a mode of transport; it is fostering a sustainable way of life and setting a powerful example for other states to follow in India’s journey towards a clean mobility future.
