Ola Electric has launched the new S1Z electric scooter, marking a major step in the company’s battery localisation strategy. The S1Z is the first mass-market Ola scooter to use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells developed and manufactured entirely in India.
Competitive Pricing for the Mass Market
The S1Z is offered in two battery configurations:
- 3.1 kWh: ₹79,999
- 5.1 kWh: ₹99,999
- Claimed IDC range of 179 km and 301 km, respectively
With its pricing, Ola is targeting India’s large, price-sensitive two-wheeler market.
Bharat Cell Technology Takes Centre Stage
The scooter uses Ola’s Bharat Cell 46-series LFP technology, developed at its Battery Innovation Centre in Bengaluru and manufactured at the company’s Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu.
LFP chemistry offers key advantages, including:
- Improved thermal stability
- Longer potential cycle life
- Reduced reliance on imported battery cells
- Greater control over battery technology and costs
Ola is aiming to use in-house cell production to reduce battery costs and strengthen its vertical integration strategy.
Smart Features and MoveOS 5
The S1Z runs on MoveOS 5 and comes equipped with features such as:
- Cruise control and regenerative braking
- Reverse mode and GPS navigation
- OTA software updates
- Easy Park functionality
- Geo, time and mode fencing
- App-based ride and energy statistics
New Dealer-Led Retail Strategy
The S1Z also introduces Ola’s dealer-operated retail model, designed to expand its presence across smaller cities and towns.
Deliveries of the 3.1 kWh version are scheduled for December 2026, while the 5.1 kWh variant will follow in March 2027.
A Strategic Battery Bet
With the S1Z, Ola Electric is combining localised battery technology, competitive pricing and wider retail reach. The move could strengthen its position as competition intensifies from TVS, Bajaj and Ather in India’s electric two-wheeler market.
