PM Modi Flags Off 200 PMI Electric Buses in Delhi, Launches “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” Green Mobility and Tree Planting Initiative

Greaves Electric Mobility

On June 5, 2025—World Environment Day—Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off 200 new electric buses from PMI Electro Mobility in Delhi, marking a significant step toward zero-emission public transport under the Green Viksit Bharat mission. The event, held at Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park, emphasized both sustainable mobility and ecological awareness, with the buses set to operate on 30 designated green routes across the capital.

Symbolic Launch and “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” Initiative

The flag-off was part of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, which encourages citizens to plant trees in honor of motherhood and nature. In a symbolic gesture, Prime Minister Modi also planted a Banyan sapling, reinforcing the need for biodiversity, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship. Dr. Aanchal Jain, CEO of PMI Electro Mobility, highlighted that the seed distribution drive and electric bus launch together pay tribute to the Prime Minister’s vision for a sustainable and Green Viksit Bharat.

Citizen Participation: Seed Cards for Sustainability

To support the campaign, PMI Electro Mobility distributed 10,000 eco-friendly seed cards containing basil and wildflower seeds to bus users and citizens. These biodegradable cards are designed for easy planting and are expected to germinate within two weeks. PMI encouraged recipients to plant the seeds at home, share selfies, and tag the company on LinkedIn to inspire broader community engagement. Dr. Jain noted, “To everyone who plants a seed, boards an electric bus, or simply chooses a sustainable option—we thank you. Together, we’re not just building mobility.”

PMI’s Growing Electric Bus Fleet and Environmental Impact

With this latest deployment, PMI Electro Mobility’s nationwide fleet now exceeds 2,500 electric buses across 31 cities. These vehicles are estimated to reduce over 250,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually, totaling more than 3 million metric tons over their lifecycle. The initiative not only supports cleaner air in urban centers but also contributes to India’s broader decarbonization and net-zero goals.

Market Leadership and Industry Growth

PMI Electro Mobility continues to lead the Indian electric bus market, having sold 485 units between January and May 2025, capturing a 30.9% market share. In May 2025 alone, PMI sold 147 buses, maintaining its top position despite increased competition from Switch Mobility, Olectra Greentech, and JBM Auto. The overall electric bus market saw 338 units sold in May 2025, up from 221 units in May 2024, reflecting steady but uneven growth as public sector fleet renewals and state-level decarbonization targets drive demand.

Outlook: Clean Mobility and Community Action

The flag-off of 200 PMI electric buses and the accompanying seed card campaign exemplify the government’s dual commitment to clean mobility and environmental consciousness. As India’s electric bus segment continues to expand—supported by policies, incentives, and growing public awareness—initiatives like these are expected to accelerate the transition to sustainable urban transport and foster a culture of ecological responsibility.
