Uttar Pradesh Accelerates Its Electric Public Transport Vision

Uttar Pradesh has approved the deployment of 1,725 new AC electric buses across 18 metropolitan cities, including all municipal corporation areas and Noida, marking one of the state’s largest public mobility initiatives.

The project will also improve connectivity to the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar, supporting both urban mobility and regional infrastructure development.

The move reflects Uttar Pradesh’s growing commitment to reducing emissions while modernising its public transport network.

A ₹1,852 Crore Investment In Clean Mobility

The project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with a total investment of ₹1,852 crore.

Fleet Deployment Plan

  • 725 electric mini buses (9-metre category)
  • 1,000 large electric buses
  • Coverage across 18 metropolitan cities
  • Connectivity to Jewar International Airport

The large-scale deployment is expected to significantly strengthen electric public transport infrastructure across the state.

Government Support To Drive Adoption

To encourage private participation, operators will receive direct financial support.

Subsidy Structure

  • ₹35 lakh subsidy per mini electric bus
  • ₹40 lakh subsidy per large electric bus

Following viability gap funding and operator incentives, the state’s net financial liability is estimated at approximately ₹653 crore.

Expanding Uttar Pradesh’s Electric Bus Network

The newly approved fleet will add to the 743 electric buses already operating in Uttar Pradesh.

This expansion is expected to create opportunities for:

  • Electric bus manufacturers
  • Battery suppliers
  • Charging infrastructure companies
  • Fleet operators
  • Mobility technology providers

The project could also help accelerate the development of supporting EV infrastructure across key urban centres.

A Major Signal For India’s E-Bus Market

Electric buses are increasingly becoming a core part of urban transport planning rather than standalone pilot projects.

As cities focus on cleaner mobility and better public transportation, large-scale deployments such as Uttar Pradesh’s latest initiative could play a critical role in driving demand across the electric bus ecosystem.

The project reinforces a broader industry trend: public transport electrification is emerging as one of the most important growth drivers in India’s EV transition.
