Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup Vimag Labs has secured an exclusive technology licensing, manufacturing and commercialisation agreement with a California-based electric truck technology company for a high-voltage EV propulsion platform.
The agreement gives Vimag access to a production-ready inverter platform integrating power electronics, controls and bidirectional energy architecture for high-power electric vehicle applications.
High-Voltage Platform Validated Across 500,000+ km
The licensed platform has been validated across more than 500,000 km of real-world operation globally. Vimag says its platform can operate at up to 1,000V, while the licensed technology is rated for systems of up to 1,200V.
The company plans to integrate the platform with its proprietary Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) technology, accelerating its entry into:
- Electric buses
- Heavy trucks
- Commercial vehicles
- High-power mobility applications
Magnet-Free Motor Technology
Vimag’s VMSM architecture is designed to eliminate conventional permanent magnets from electric motors. Instead, the system uses power electronics and proprietary control software to generate and manage the magnetic field.
The approach could help reduce dependence on rare-earth permanent magnets while enabling new powertrain configurations.
Bidirectional Power Opens New Possibilities
The high-voltage platform also supports bidirectional power flow, potentially enabling applications beyond vehicle propulsion, including:
- Vehicle-to-vehicle energy transfer
- AC power output
- Mobile energy systems
India to Drive Technology Industrialisation
Vimag plans to use India as a key base for technology development and industrialisation while targeting global opportunities across commercial vehicles, defence, industrial systems, rail and marine mobility.
The partnership could strengthen India’s high-voltage EV powertrain ecosystem by combining Vimag’s magnet-free motor technology with an already validated propulsion platform, potentially shortening the route from deep-tech development to commercial deployment.
