Renault’s Game-Changing Fire Safety Tech Now Free for All Carmakers

"Renault Fireman Access EV fire safety"

February 24th, 2025

Renault Group has taken a bold step toward making electric vehicles safer. The company is now sharing its breakthrough fire safety technology, called Fireman Access, with the entire automotive industry at no cost.

What makes this innovation special? First, it can help put out an EV battery fire in minutes instead of hours. Additionally, it uses ten times less water than traditional methods.

The system works through a clever but simple design. A special adhesive disc covers an opening in the battery case. When firefighters aim their water hose at the disc during a fire, it comes off. This allows water to quickly reach and cool the battery cells.

“Safety shouldn’t have barriers,” says Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group. “We’re proud to share this technology with everyone.” Furthermore, he emphasized that this move aligns with their commitment to the United Nations for safer global mobility.

Currently, all electric and hybrid vehicles from Renault, Dacia, Alpine, and Mobilize use this system. Moreover, the company has secured seven patents for this innovation.

Other manufacturers can now easily access this technology. They simply need to visit Renault’s open collaborative platform for a free license. In return, they agree to share any improvements they make with other users.

This initiative stems from Renault’s close work with fire services. Additionally, it marks the first step in their partnership with Jean Todt, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety.

Through this sharing of technology, Renault aims to create a safer future for electric vehicles worldwide. After all, when it comes to safety, collaboration beats competition every time.
