Expanding into Energy Storage
Jupiter Electric Mobility (JEM), a subsidiary of Jupiter Wagons Limited, has announced the launch of containerised Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in 10-foot and 20-foot formats. With modular capacities ranging from 241 kWh to 3 MWh, the systems target applications such as diesel generator replacement, solar energy storage, energy shifting, and backup solutions for commercial and industrial users.

First Deployment and Partnerships
The inaugural 10-foot BESS unit was supplied in partnership with GMMCO, part of the CK Birla Group, to Greenlit, a Mumbai-based subsidiary of Recube serving the events, entertainment, and hospitality sectors. JEM has designed and manufactured the systems entirely in-house, from container fabrication to battery integration, at its Indore and Bangalore facilities.

Technical Features and Roadmap
The 10-foot units deliver 200 kW output at 440 VAC, with air cooling and a 10-year operational life. JEM plans to scale its Indore plant from 1 GWh to 5 GWh annual capacity by 2028 to meet rising demand. Export ambitions begin in October with a shipment to Africa, alongside future plans for liquid-cooled, grid-scale BESS solutions.

Strategic Importance
According to Managing Director Vivek Lohia, the launch is a milestone for JEM’s battery division, aligning with IEC standards and ongoing certifications. Industry partners emphasize the role of containerised storage in enabling round-the-clock renewable power and reducing carbon intensity. The initiative supports India’s Net Zero 2070 commitment and diversifies Jupiter Wagons Limited’s portfolio beyond rail and commercial vehicles into the clean energy market.
