MIT-WPU Pune Lab Solves Hydrogen Storage Challenge with 2-Hour LOHC Breakthrough

EV Magazine Issue 10

MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) in Pune achieves global-leading hydrogen storage via Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) system. Researchers cut storage time to 2 hours from worldwide 18-hour average. The method transports hydrogen as safe liquid under normal conditions.

LOHC Enables Safe Hydrogen Logistics

Hydrogenation process bonds H2 into organic liquid at 130°C and 56 bar, far below cryogenic 253°C or extreme pressures. Dehydrogenation releases 86% hydrogen for reuse; carrier liquid cycles indefinitely. Existing fuel tankers handle transport without new infrastructure.

World-Beating Efficiency Metrics

System packs 11,000 liters hydrogen into 15.6 liters carrier, outperforming global benchmarks. After 50 failed days and 100 trials, Prof. Rajib Kumar Sinharay’s team succeeds. Lab handles 350°C/200 bar for scalable testing.

National Impact via Green Hydrogen Mission

Innovation supports heavy transport, industry decarbonization, and self-reliance goals. OCPL founder Siddharth Mayur backs commercialization. Patent filings advance India toward hydrogen hub status amid clean energy race.
