India’s commercial vehicle sector is entering a new phase of fleet renewal as leading manufacturers align with government-led initiatives aimed at replacing older, high-emission vehicles. Mahindra & Mahindra and SML Mahindra have joined the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ vehicle replacement scheme for Delhi-NCR, expanding industry participation in one of India’s most significant commercial mobility modernisation programmes.
Strengthening India’s Fleet Renewal Mission
Under the agreement signed with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Mahindra & Mahindra and SML Mahindra will offer an 8% discount on the ex-showroom price of eligible trucks and buses purchased under the scheme.
The initiative is designed to encourage fleet operators to replace ageing commercial vehicles with cleaner and more efficient alternatives.
Key Benefits Under The Scheme
• 8% OEM discount on eligible trucks and buses
• 5% interest subvention from the Central Government
• Monthly fuel vouchers for five years
• Motor vehicle tax concessions from participating states
• Registration fee waivers for eligible beneficiaries
These incentives significantly reduce the ownership cost of new commercial vehicles while encouraging the retirement of older and more polluting fleets.
Industry Participation Continues To Grow
Mahindra joins a growing list of manufacturers supporting the programme.
Earlier, the Government signed similar agreements with:
• Ashok Leyland
• Switch Mobility
• Tata Motors
Together, these companies account for nearly 75% of India’s truck and bus market, giving the scheme substantial industry coverage and implementation strength.
Why This Matters For The Commercial Vehicle Sector
The participation of major OEMs signals growing momentum behind India’s fleet modernisation efforts. While electrification remains an important long-term goal, replacing older commercial vehicles can deliver immediate benefits in terms of emissions reduction, fuel efficiency and operational reliability.
The programme also highlights the increasing collaboration between policymakers and vehicle manufacturers to accelerate the transition towards cleaner transportation solutions.
The Bigger Industry Signal
Fleet renewal is emerging as a critical pillar of India’s clean mobility strategy. As incentives improve and OEM participation expands, commercial fleet replacement could become one of the biggest drivers of transport sector transformation over the next few years, particularly across freight, logistics and public transport segments.
