Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, has expanded its lithium-ion electric forklift fleet to 142 units, marking a major sustainability milestone. Announced on World Sustainable Transport Day, the expansion more than doubles the company’s previous fleet size and strengthens its push toward cleaner, energy-efficient industrial logistics.
Driving Decarbonization Through Electric Mobility
The company’s multi-phase rollout of electric forklifts across its operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh aligns with its broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. At the Jharsuguda smelter, where 116 units are deployed, the shift is expected to:
- Eliminate 4,450 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions every year
- Reduce 16.3 lakh litres of diesel consumption
- Enhance workplace safety through quieter, cleaner operations
- Reduce maintenance downtime due to simpler electric drivetrain systems
Strengthening Sustainability and Social Inclusion
Vedanta’s initiative goes beyond environmental gains. The company has created new opportunities for women and transgender operators, demonstrating how sustainable technologies can enable social transformation. The fleet also includes India’s first 10-tonne electric forklifts, deployed at the Jharsuguda smelter.
A Step Toward India’s Cleaner Industrial Future
CEO Rajiv Kumar emphasized that sustainability at Vedanta is a “catalyst for transformation.” By deploying the country’s largest industrial EV fleet, Vedanta showcases how the integration of clean technologies can bolster performance while advancing environmental and social responsibility.
With over 142 electric forklifts now operational, Vedanta Aluminium is setting a national benchmark for decarbonizing industrial operations—leading the way for a greener, more inclusive future for Indian manufacturing.
