Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is preparing to launch its first electric SUV, the VF7, in India. The official debut is expected around October 2025. Recently, the VF7 was spotted on a flatbed truck in Mumbai, indicating that local testing and homologation have begun. This sighting marks a crucial step in VinFast’s entry into India’s growing EV market.
First Look: VF7 Spotted in India
The VF7 appeared in Jet Black, one of four global colors. Other options include Brahimny White, Crimson Red, and Neptune Grey. Interestingly, the India-spec model runs on 19-inch alloy wheels with 245/50 R19 Apollo Aspire tyres, instead of the 20-inch wheels seen on global variants. This change likely improves handling on Indian roads.
Spy shots confirm several premium features, such as:
- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) with wing mirror cameras
- A 360-degree camera setup for safer maneuvering
- A large floating touchscreen infotainment system (either 12.9-inch or 15-inch)
- A modern, sleek design focused on comfort and technology
Powertrain and Variants
Internationally, the VF7 is available in two variants—Eco and Plus. Both come with a 75.3 kWh battery pack:
- Eco: Single motor, 204 hp, 310 Nm torque, 450 km claimed range
- Plus: Dual motor with AWD, 354 hp, 500 Nm torque, 431 km claimed range
VinFast has not yet confirmed which variant(s) will reach India. However, based on these specs, the VF7 is expected to compete directly with premium models like the BYD Atto 3.
Local Assembly and Market Strategy
VinFast plans to assemble the VF7 locally at its new facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The plant will begin operations by June 2025 and is part of a $2 billion investment. With an annual capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles, the facility will support both domestic and export demands.
Local production will likely help VinFast price the VF7 between ₹20 lakh and ₹30 lakh, making it competitive. In addition, VinFast is exploring a battery leasing or subscription model to lower the upfront cost of ownership. This model has already worked well in Vietnam and aligns with trends in India’s EV space.
Features and Dimensions
The VF7 fits in the compact SUV category with the following dimensions:
- Length: 4,545 mm
- Width: 1,890 mm
- Height: 1,635 mm
Key features include:
- ADAS suite with 360-degree camera
- 12.9-inch or 15-inch touchscreen options
- 19-inch alloy wheels tailored for Indian conditions
- Multiple color variants
Competitive Landscape
When launched, the VF7 will face off against rivals like the BYD Atto 3. VinFast’s aggressive investment, local manufacturing strategy, and premium features give it a strong position in India’s premium electric SUV segment.
Outlook
With its Indian launch timed for the festive season in October 2025, the VinFast VF7 could redefine expectations in the EV space. Thanks to its combination of local assembly, cutting-edge features, and flexible ownership models, the VF7 is poised to become a game-changer for Indian electric mobility.
