Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast will soon enter the Indian market. The company’s new plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, will start operations within three to four months, says Dr. TRB Rajaa, Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister.
This quick progress comes after VinFast began construction on the 400-acre site in February 2024. The plant will first produce 50,000 vehicles yearly, using completely knocked down (CKD) operations.
“VinFast is set to open in just three or four months,” Dr. Rajaa announced at the Future Powertrain Conclave. This timeline shows the company’s strong commitment to quickly enter the Indian market.
Third Global Factory
The Thoothukudi facility marks VinFast’s third production hub worldwide, adding to its plants in Vietnam and the United States. Workers have already completed 90% of the construction. Meanwhile, the company is looking for local suppliers to help make its vehicles more affordable for Indian buyers.
First Models Coming Soon
VinFast plans to launch its mid-size electric SUVs first. The VF7 and VF6 models will arrive before India’s festival season. These vehicles will cost between Rs 20-30 lakh, competing with models from Mahindra, Hyundai, and Tata Motors.
Growth Plans
Although the plant will first serve Indian customers, VinFast has bigger plans. The company aims to eventually make 150,000 vehicles yearly and sell to Middle Eastern and African markets too.
“Thoothukudi is now emerging as the state’s fourth major auto cluster,” Dr. Rajaa added. This development further strengthens Tamil Nadu’s important role in India’s car manufacturing industry.
Beyond Just Cars
VinFast wants to create a complete EV ecosystem in India. Following its successful approach in Southeast Asia, the company will also build charging stations and offer financing and leasing options.
As a result, VinFast’s arrival will likely increase competition and bring new ideas to India’s electric vehicle market. With its fast timeline and complete approach, VinFast is making a big bet on India’s electric future.
