EV Magazine Issue 10

VinFast, the Vietnam-based electric vehicle manufacturer, is gearing up to enter India’s electric two-wheeler market in H2 2026 with scooters developed specifically for Indian conditions and consumer preferences. This bold expansion forms part of the automaker’s broader “green mobility ecosystem” and local product strategy.

Local Production and Long-Term Capacity Ambitions

The company will house its two-wheeler programme at its existing facility in Tamil Nadu, where a dedicated electric scooter production line is being developed. VinFast’s leadership has articulated a long-term capacity goal of 1 million two-wheelers, illustrating the seriousness of its commitment to India’s EV market; however, this target is strategic and not tied to first-year volumes.

Tailored Products and Supplier Engagement

Rather than importing global models, VinFast is focusing on scooters designed around Indian road conditions, commuting distances and price sensitivities insights derived from extensive market research. In parallel, the company is engaging with Indian suppliers to localize key components, including batteries, to improve competitiveness and cost efficiencies.

Part of a Broader EV Ecosystem Strategy

The scooter entry complements VinFast’s ongoing efforts in India, which include manufacturing electric cars, building charging infrastructure and pursuing government incentive programmes. The automaker is moving step-by-step, planning a new product launch approximately every six months as it scales its presence in India.
