Tesla Debuts in India with Model Y at ₹59.89 Lakh

After years of anticipation, Tesla has officially launched the Model Y in India at a starting price of ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). This debut coincides with the opening of the company’s first Indian showroom, strategically located in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), marking a major milestone for India’s electric vehicle market.

Model Y Variants, Pricing, and Deliveries

The India-spec Tesla Model Y is available in two variants:

  • Standard Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): ₹59.89 lakh, with a WLTP-certified range of up to 500 km on a single charge and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.9 seconds.
  • Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): ₹67.89 lakh, offering an impressive range of up to 622 km and a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.6 seconds.

Both variants come as Completely Built Units (CBUs), explaining the significant price premium over the US and European markets due to India’s high import duties and taxes. Bookings are already open, and deliveries will begin in Q3 2025 for the Standard RWD, with the Long Range variant following from October onwards.

Performance, Technology, and Luxury Features

The Tesla Model Y offers compelling performance with a top speed of 201 km/h for both variants. Key interior and tech features include:

  • 15.4-inch central touchscreen and an 8-inch display for rear passengers
  • Ventilated seats
  • Seven airbags
  • Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS)
  • Full Self-Driving (FSD) package available for an additional ₹6 lakh
  • Premium interior with the option to upgrade exterior paint and interior theme for up to ₹1.85 lakh extra

Customers can also look forward to Tesla’s “Tessie” mobile app integration for seamless connectivity and feature control.

Showroom, Service, and Charging Infrastructure

Tesla’s move is bolstered by the inauguration of its Mumbai showroom, as well as the announcement of upcoming supercharger installations in Mumbai and Delhi, providing crucial support for early adopters. The company has also set up a service centre and warehouse close to the Mumbai showroom to facilitate after-sales support and logistics.

India Pricing Compared to Global Markets

The Model Y’s pricing in India is notably higher than in the US, where it starts at roughly $38,000 (approx. ₹32 lakh), and in China and Europe, due to import duties that can exceed 70%. This premium could lessen in the future if Tesla decides to assemble vehicles locally.
