New Delhi, September 9, 2025 – In a landmark step for India’s clean mobility future, National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) and Transvolt Mobility have announced the deployment of 1,000 electric trucks across the country. The milestone was unveiled on World EV Day 2025, marking the successful completion of a year-long technical and commercial trial that began in Chennai last year.
From Trial to Nationwide Deployment
The exercise was launched on World EV Day 2024 to test the viability of heavy-duty electric trucks on Indian freight routes. The initiative brought together policy makers, logistics companies, financiers, and OEMs, building the framework for large-scale adoption.
Key enablers included:
- ₹500 Crore blended climate finance instrument opened in August 2025.
- Projected deployment of 720–810 trucks under Viability Gap Funding (VGF).
- Final outcome exceeding expectations with 1,000 trucks confirmed.
Financing and Policy Support
The rollout was accelerated by strong capital backing:
- $57M Viability Gap Funding under NHEV.
- $20M equity investment from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) into Transvolt Mobility.
- PM E-DRIVE scheme, offering upfront subsidies of ₹2.7–9.3 lakh per truck.
Lower Costs, Higher Confidence
According to project leaders, costs of electric trucks are expected to drop from ₹1.25 crore to ₹90 lakh, making them competitive with diesel fleets. This reduction could lead to 10% lower logistics costs, boosting adoption among shippers, ports, and construction firms.
A Greener Freight Future
The new fleet will be deployed across Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals, ports, and major freight corridors, transporting cement, steel, coal, automobiles, and more.
With strong public-private partnerships and climate financing models, this 1,000-truck rollout signals a major shift in India’s freight transport—accelerating the transition to zero-emission, future-ready logistics.
