Maharashtra Karnataka Kerala Drive 40% of India’s Record EV Sales

Greaves Electric Mobility

India’s electric passenger vehicle (e-PV) industry is charging ahead at full speed in 2025. In just the first seven months of the year, retail sales have reached a record 91,110 units, marking a 60% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to the 56,930 units sold during the same period in 2024.

The numbers are even more impressive when you consider that this figure already represents 91% of last year’s full-year sales (99,634 units in CY2024). If the current momentum continues, the market is set to smash the 150,000-unit mark by the end of 2025.

Maharashtra Retains the Crown as India’s EV Capital

Maharashtra is steering the national EV narrative with 15,873 electric cars, SUVs, and MPVs sold from January to July 2025. This is not just the highest among all states, but also a remarkable 95% growth over last year’s 8,129 units in the same period.

The state now commands a 17% market share, up from 14% a year ago. This performance cements Maharashtra’s leadership not only in passenger EVs but also across other segments like electric two-wheelers and commercial vehicles.

Karnataka and Kerala Keep the South in the Fast Lane

Karnataka holds the No. 2 spot with 10,621 units, representing a solid 39% YoY growth. Kerala follows closely with 10,148 units and an impressive 52% surge in sales compared to last year.

Together, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala account for 40% of India’s total e-PV sales this year — a testament to the strong EV adoption in these regions.

Southern States Hold a Strong Grip

When it comes to regional dominance, southern states (Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu) collectively clocked 28,332 units, translating to a 31% share of all-India e-PV sales. While slightly lower than last year’s 33%, the region remains a major growth engine for the industry.

Northern Region Shows Rapid Acceleration

The northern region — comprising Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana — sold 23,510 units in the first seven months of 2025, securing a 26% share of the national market. Notably, Uttar Pradesh leads in growth rate with a 106% YoY jump, doubling its sales from 3,321 to 6,826 units.

Western States Make Significant Gains

The western region, led by Maharashtra and Gujarat, registered 21,277 units, taking up a 23% market share — up from 20% last year. Gujarat alone contributed 5,404 units, marking a 49% YoY increase.

Eastern Region Still Finding its Footing

In the east, West Bengal is the standout player with 3,330 units sold, up 73% YoY, holding a 4% share. While the numbers are smaller compared to other regions, the growth rate shows promise.

Best-Ever Monthly Sales in July

July 2025 marked the industry’s best month yet, with 15,799 units sold. Sales have consistently stayed above 13,000 units for four consecutive months — a streak driven by new product launches and strong consumer interest.

Supply Chain Watch Rare Earth Magnets

While the outlook for 2025 is bullish, one potential speed bump is the availability of rare earth magnets from China. These are critical for EV motors, power steering systems, generators, dashboard displays, and LED lighting. Any disruption in supply could impact production volumes.

The Road Ahead Looks Electric

With competitive launches from leading OEMs like Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor India, and Mahindra & Mahindra, the e-PV segment is experiencing fierce competition and rapid growth. Consumer adoption is no longer limited to metro cities, and sales data clearly show expanding demand across regions.

If supply chains remain stable, India’s electric passenger vehicle industry could well make 2025 a landmark year with over 150,000 units sold — a milestone that would cement the country’s place in the global EV transition.
