Kerala is taking a significant step towards strengthening its EV ecosystem. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced the launch of public EV charging stations (EVPCS) at bus depots across the state. This initiative aims to tackle the shortage of EV charging points and support the growing number of electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles.
Phase 1 Rollout and Future Expansion
- Phase 1 Locations: Charging stations will initially be installed at Munnar, Vithura, and Sultan Bathery bus depots.
- Expansion Plans: KSRTC plans to expand to 73 depots and 20 operating centers. Ernakulam bus station, scheduled for renovation, is also part of this plan.
Revenue Model and Collaboration
KSRTC has adopted a Build and Operate Model, leasing land to private operators for setting up and managing the EVPCS.
- Revenue Sharing:
- Fixed monthly rent equivalent to the cost of 500 electricity units per charger.
- Additional revenue based on electricity usage.
- Facilities: Each station will occupy two cents of land and feature three charging bays, operated and maintained 24/7 by private operators.
Call for Bidders
KSRTC has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) for private operators to design, install, and manage fast EV charging stations.
- Process:
- Joint inspections to evaluate depot suitability.
- Contracts awarded to top bidders who will secure High Tension (HT) or Low Tension (LT) connections from Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd (KSEBL).
- Power Limits: Each station will operate under a 100 KWh power cap, with at least one charging point per facility.
A Vision for Sustainable Mobility
This initiative aligns with KSRTC’s successful ‘Yatra Fuels’ program, which has already saved ₹215 crore in fuel costs over two years. The program aims to grow to 50 outlets by FY 2024-25. By integrating EV charging at bus depots, KSRTC is supporting Kerala’s transition to green mobility while creating new revenue streams.
