Exide Industries Injects ₹100 Crore into Lithium-Ion Battery Arm for Greenfield Project

Greaves Electric Mobility

Kolkata – In a strategic move to bolster its presence in the electric vehicle (EV) battery market, Exide Industries has invested an additional ₹100 crore into its wholly-owned subsidiary, Exide Energy Solutions Limited (EESL). The capital infusion, made on August 20, 2025, through an equity share subscription, is earmarked to support the ongoing development of EESL’s greenfield lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.

This latest investment raises Exide’s total commitment to EESL to ₹3,802.23 crore and underscores the company’s long-term vision for clean energy and sustainable mobility. The funds will be crucial for the capital-intensive project, which aims to establish a large-scale manufacturing plant for advanced chemistry battery cells, including cylindrical, pouch, and prismatic formats, as well as battery modules and packs. This facility will cater to the rapidly growing demand from India’s EV sector and stationary energy storage applications.

EESL, incorporated in March 2022, is at the forefront of Exide’s strategic pivot towards next-generation battery technologies. Despite Exide Industries’ 100% ownership remaining unchanged, this continuous financial support is vital for EESL to scale its operations and compete in the highly dynamic and technology-driven EV battery market. While EESL reported a net loss of ₹209.12 crore for the fiscal year 2025 on a turnover of ₹116.89 crore, the ongoing investments reflect a long-term strategy focused on capturing future growth rather than immediate profitability.

The greenfield plant in Bengaluru is a cornerstone of Exide’s strategy to become a key player in the EV supply chain, reducing India’s reliance on imported lithium-ion cells and strengthening the domestic manufacturing ecosystem. As the demand for EVs continues to surge, Exide’s proactive investment in advanced battery manufacturing positions the company to be a critical contributor to India’s electric mobility revolution.
