SWITCH Mobility and PURPLE BUS have launched an electric intercity bus service on the Nagpur–Chandrapur route in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, marking another step towards sustainable long-distance public transportation in India.

The service was flagged off in the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. Initially, six electric buses have been deployed under an order for 50 SWITCH EiV12m intercity coaches.

SWITCH EiV12m: Built for Long-Distance Travel

The SWITCH EiV12m is designed to deliver comfortable and efficient intercity journeys while supporting the transition away from diesel-powered transportation.

Key features include:

  • 45 pushback seats for passenger comfort.
  • 350 km claimed range on a single charge.
  • Fast-charging capability for efficient fleet operations.
  • SWITCH iON connected technology for real-time vehicle monitoring.

These features are intended to support reliable operations on intercity routes while helping operators manage fleet performance and charging requirements.

Expanding Electric Intercity Connectivity

The Nagpur–Chandrapur service marks SWITCH Mobility’s third intercity deployment with Prasanna Purple Mobility Solutions in 2026. Earlier deployments included the Mumbai–Pune and Dombivli–Pune routes.

According to PURPLE BUS, its electric intercity fleet has already covered more than 10 lakh kilometres, demonstrating growing operational experience with electric coaches.

The broader order of 50 buses also signals potential for expanding electric intercity connectivity across Maharashtra.

Can Electric Coaches Transform Intercity Travel?

Electric buses could help reduce diesel consumption, operating emissions and fuel-related expenses on busy routes. However, large-scale adoption will depend on several factors:

  • Reliable charging infrastructure along routes and at depots.
  • Real-world driving range under full passenger loads.
  • Efficient scheduling and charging management.
  • Dependable maintenance and service support.

HEV’s Take

The Nagpur–Chandrapur launch highlights the growing role of electric mobility beyond urban transport. If operators can achieve dependable performance and lower total ownership costs, electric intercity coaches could become an increasingly practical alternative to conventional diesel buses across India.
