Electric Vehicle Retail Sales Rise 52.9% in August 2026

India’s electric vehicle (EV) retail sales surged 52.9 percent year-on-year (YoY) to 2,98,448 units in August 2026, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). EV penetration rose to 12.3 percent, compared with 9.5 percent in August 2025.

All four major EV categories recorded YoY growth, with electric two-wheelers contributing the largest share of overall volumes.

Electric Two-Wheelers Drive EV Growth

Electric two-wheeler retail sales increased 67.05 percent YoY to 1,83,204 units, although sales declined 10.35 percent from July.

Top sellers:

  • TVS Motor Company: 48,938 units
  • Bajaj Auto: 41,114 units
  • Ather Energy: 28,757 units
  • Hero MotoCorp: 19,007 units
  • Ola Electric: 13,852 units

Electric two-wheelers accounted for 10.7 percent of total two-wheeler sales, up from 7.7 percent a year earlier.

Three-Wheeler Adoption Continues to Accelerate

Electric three-wheeler sales climbed 25.28 percent YoY to 79,846 units. Their market penetration reached 65.3 percent, compared with 56.6 percent in August 2025.

Bajaj Auto led with 13,833 units, followed by Mahindra Group at 12,819 units.

Electric Cars Post Strong Growth

Electric passenger vehicle sales rose 51.89 percent YoY to 30,696 units. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles led with 13,158 units, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW MG Motor India.

Commercial EVs Hit Record August

Electric commercial vehicle sales jumped 188.3 percent YoY to a record 4,702 units. Tata Motors led the segment, followed by Euler Motors and Sany Heavy Industry India.

With strong growth across every category, August highlights the accelerating adoption of EVs across India’s mobility ecosystem.
