Olectra Greentech is preparing for a major expansion in India’s electric commercial vehicle market, targeting an annual manufacturing capacity of 10,000 buses and trucks within the next 2–3 years.
₹600 Crore Investment to Drive Next-Gen EV Expansion
The company has earmarked around ₹600 crore for the expansion, including:
- ₹450 crore for next-generation bus and truck platforms
- ₹150 crore for infrastructure and manufacturing facilities
- Increased focus on localisation of components and technology
Olectra expects India’s electric bus market to reach around 20,000 units annually over the next three years. Its planned capacity could therefore potentially address 40–50% of the market, depending on utilisation.
New Electric Platforms Coming in FY27
Olectra is developing a broad portfolio of new commercial EVs, with launches expected in Q3 and Q4 FY27.
The upcoming range includes:
- New 9-metre and 12-metre electric buses
- A 12-metre low-floor city bus
- A 13.5-metre electric coach
- A dedicated electric truck platform
The expansion is aimed at strengthening Olectra’s presence across public transport, intercity mobility and commercial logistics.
Deliveries Cross 4,000 Electric Buses
Olectra has already surpassed 4,000 cumulative electric bus deliveries and delivered more than 350 buses in each of the last four quarters, highlighting sustained demand.
However, financing remains a key challenge for private operators. Electric buses generally require 5–7 year financing, compared with around 3–4 years for conventional buses.
HEV’s Take
Olectra’s capacity plans signal that India’s electric bus market is moving beyond government-led deployments toward a broader commercial ecosystem. Financing, localisation, uptime and charging infrastructure will ultimately determine how quickly this planned capacity translates into actual market growth.
