Toyota enters India’s EV market with Urban Cruiser Ebella
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has unveiled the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella, the company’s first all-electric SUV for the Indian market. The Urban Cruiser Ebella represents a key milestone in Toyota’s multi-pathway electrification strategy, which includes hybrids, alternative fuels and full battery electric vehicles. The SUV is developed under the global Toyota-Suzuki alliance and shares underpinnings with the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, while exhibiting distinctive Toyota design and feature enhancements.
The Urban Cruiser Ebella will be offered with two battery options: a 49 kWh unit producing 106 kW of power and a 61 kWh unit delivering 128 kW, both paired with a front-mounted motor generating 189 Nm of torque. The larger battery pack achieves a 543 km ARAI-certified driving range on a single charge, addressing range anxiety while positioning the SUV competitively in India’s electric segment.
Features, safety and ownership solutions
The SUV comes equipped with a comprehensive Level-2 ADAS suite, seven airbags, 360-degree cameras and electronic stability aids, reinforcing safety for both urban and highway driving. Inside, the Urban Cruiser Ebella features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Comfort and convenience are enhanced with ventilated seats, panoramic roof, ambient lighting and connected tech functions.
To alleviate long-term ownership concerns, Toyota is providing an 8-year battery warranty, Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) options and a 60 % assured buyback program after three years. These customer-centric programs aim to reduce depreciation fears and support wider BEV adoption. Bookings for the Urban Cruiser Ebella opened from 20 January 2026, with pricing expected to be announced closer to delivery.
Market positioning and segment outlook
In a rapidly growing midsize electric SUV segment, the Urban Cruiser Ebella will compete with offerings such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV and other future entrants like the Maruti e-Vitara. Toyota’s entry with a strong range figure, technology suite and ownership benefits signals its intent to capture demand from urban buyers seeking a premium yet practical electric driving experience.
