Skoda Auto is preparing to take a bold step in India’s electric mobility journey. In an exclusive statement, Skoda’s global CEO Klaus Zellmer confirmed that the company is working on a new, affordable electric vehicle tailored for the Indian market.
A Platform Designed for India
The upcoming EV will be built on a localized version of the CMP 21 platform, originally developed in China but customized for Indian conditions. This platform will not only underpin Skoda’s EVs but will also support future Volkswagen models in India.
- Localized CMP 21 platform adapted for India
- Potential for multiple small EV launches
- Focus on affordability and practicality for Indian consumers
India: Skoda’s “Second Leg”
Zellmer highlighted that the “big game” in EV adoption will begin once this localized platform is in place. He stressed that India is poised to become the brand’s second key global business hub after Europe, reducing Skoda’s reliance on Western markets.
Success of the India 2.0 Strategy
Since 2018, Skoda’s India 2.0 strategy, backed by a €1 billion investment in the MQB-A0-IN platform, has transformed its position:
- Launch of Kushaq and Slavia boosted sales and visibility
- Dealer network and after-sales service expansion improved customer trust
- Stronger localization helping to cut costs and enhance value
Beyond EVs: Focus on CO₂ Reduction
At IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, Skoda showcased its global EV ambitions with models like the Epiq EV and Vision O concept. However, Zellmer confirmed the Epiq is not destined for India.
Instead, he praised India’s GST reforms and E20 fuel push, noting that cutting CO₂ emissions holistically is more important than focusing only on drivetrain technologies.
The Road Ahead
With an India-specific affordable EV on the horizon, Skoda is aiming to cement its role as a key player in India’s electric future, making sustainable mobility more accessible to millions.
