Home » Ola Electric to Revolutionize EV Market with In-House Battery Production
The company, known for its innovative approach to EV manufacturing, is working on integrating its proprietary “Bharat” battery cells into its vehicles, marking a significant step towards achieving energy self-sufficiency.
The “Bharat” cell, designed in the 4680 format, represents a technological leap for Ola Electric. Developed entirely by Ola’s research team, this battery cell offers five times the energy density compared to the standard cells currently used in their electric scooters. With over 70 patents secured, the company is confident that these cells will dramatically enhance the range and performance of their future electric vehicles.
Ola plans to begin integrating these in-house battery cells into its electric motorcycles and scooters by early 2025. This shift follows the pilot production of approximately 10,000 cells at Ola’s state-of-the-art Gigafactory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. Initially, the factory will have a capacity of 5 GWh in 2024, with plans to expand to 20 GWh by 2026, and an ambitious target of reaching 100 GWh by 2030.
This in-house battery production is part of Ola’s larger vision to reduce dependency on imported battery cells, thereby cutting costs and making electric vehicles more affordable for the masses. The move is in line with India’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, under which Ola was awarded 20 GWh out of the 50 GWh allocated.
In conjunction with its battery innovations, Ola recently unveiled a new lineup of electric motorcycles, including the Roadster series, which will be among the first to feature these cutting-edge battery cells. With this bold initiative, Ola Electric aims to lead the charge in India’s electric mobility revolution, driving both technological advancements and sustainable growth.
Ola’s commitment to innovation and self-reliance positions the company as a key player in the global EV market, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in electric transportation. As the company continues to scale its operations and integrate these new technologies, it is poised to set new benchmarks for the industry both in India and worldwide.
