City records notable growth in EV registrations
Mysuru has witnessed a pronounced increase in electric two-wheeler registrations, indicating growing consumer interest in electric mobility. The Mysuru East RTO reported a year-on-year surge of 16%, with 1,424 EVs registered in the first 10 months of the 2025-26 fiscal year, compared with 1,225 in the entire 2024-25 fiscal year. These figures mainly reflect registrations of electric scooters, which continue to dominate demand in the two-wheeler segment. Meanwhile, EV passenger cars in the city have also seen a pickup, with 20 registrations recorded by mid-January 2026 compared to 12 in the previous full year.
The uptick coincides with broader EV adoption trends across India, where two-wheelers remain the primary driver of EV growth. Nationwide data shows that electric two-wheelers accounted for more than half of all EV registrations, contributing to India’s overall EV uptake.
Drivers of the transition to electric two-wheelers
Several factors are converging to accelerate EV adoption in Mysuru. Rising fuel prices have increased the total cost of ownership for internal combustion engine vehicles, making EVs more attractive. Improved battery technology, offering better range and reliability, also plays a role in alleviating purchase hesitancy. Additionally, government incentives, reduced registration fees for EVs, and a gradually expanding charging infrastructure are lowering barriers to adoption.
Another factor is the growing adoption of EVs by delivery and gig-economy fleets, which are sensitive to operating costs. EV two-wheelers offer lower running and maintenance costs, making them economically compelling for last-mile delivery services and freelance riders who log daily mileage.
Implications for local mobility
Mysuru’s EV registration growth reflects a broader shift in mobility preferences that aligns with India’s long-term electric transition goals. As secondary cities increasingly embrace EVs, there are opportunities for deeper infrastructure investment, targeted policy support and service network expansion. Continued focus on total cost of ownership advantages and charging accessibility will be key to sustaining momentum in cities like Mysuru and beyond.
