When you hear the name Dr. Rashi Gupta, one thing stands out—her indomitable spirit. Known across the industry as the Batterywali of India, she’s not just a leader in renewable energy; she’s a pioneer redefining the energy landscape with innovation, resilience, and purpose.
In this exclusive interview, Dr. Gupta shares her journey, the challenges she overcame, and her vision for a greener, more equitable future.
The Spark that Lit the Flame
What first drew you to the field of energy storage and renewable technology? Was there a defining moment that sparked your journey?
Dr. Gupta:
“My journey began with a growing concern for the environment and the inefficiencies of traditional energy systems. I knew there had to be a better way.
A pivotal moment came during a business exchange program in Germany, where I was introduced to lithium-based energy storage. Collaborating with German experts opened my eyes to the potential of this technology to address India’s unique energy challenges. That experience changed everything—it gave me a mission to bring transformative solutions to my country.”
Building Vision Mechatronics: Dreaming Big Against All Odds
Starting Vision Mechatronics in 2009 must have been daunting. What was your vision, and how did you turn it into reality?
Dr. Gupta:
“Starting a company in a sector dominated by giants was no small feat. My vision was simple but bold: to bridge cutting-edge technology with real-world applications in robotics, renewable energy, and energy storage.
Here’s how we did it:
- Assembling a Team: I brought together engineers and scientists who shared my passion for innovation.
- Strategic Partnerships: We collaborated with industry leaders globally to access expertise and resources.
- Customer Focus: We tailored solutions to meet client needs, ensuring we built trust and credibility.
These steps helped us navigate the challenges and establish Vision Mechatronics as a key player in the industry.”
Breaking Barriers as a Woman in STEM
Navigating a male-dominated field must have tested your resolve. Can you share a moment where you had to rise above these challenges?
Dr. Gupta:
“Being a woman in STEM has its challenges. During the early stages of developing the OneBox® system, a maintenance-free energy solution, I faced skepticism. Some questioned whether my approach was even feasible.
Instead of backing down, I dug deeper, refined the technology, and gathered data to prove my vision. Today, OneBox® is transforming rural electrification, powering schools, and even increasing girl-student admissions. It taught me that challenges can be the best motivators.”
Leading the Circular Economy for Batteries
Vision Mechatronics is a leader in sustainability. Tell us about your initiatives in battery reuse and recycling.
Dr. Gupta:
“We launched ReLIVE, India’s first high-voltage second-life battery initiative. By repurposing used EV batteries for stationary energy storage, we’re reducing waste and maximizing resource efficiency.
Our goal is to establish a circular economy for batteries—extending their life, recovering valuable materials, and making sustainability a core part of energy storage. It’s about creating a future where nothing goes to waste.”
Empowering Communities with the OneBox® System
How has the OneBox® system impacted rural communities, and what does this mean to you personally?
Dr. Gupta:
“The impact has been profound. By providing clean energy to rural schools, we’ve improved learning environments, enabled evening classes, and enhanced community engagement.
One of the most fulfilling outcomes is the increase in girl-student admissions due to improved access to electricity and sanitation. Seeing technology create real social change is the most rewarding part of my work.”
Driving Change for Women in STEM
You’ve been a vocal advocate for women in STEM. How are you inspiring others to break barriers?
Dr. Gupta:
“Growing up, I often encountered gender bias, which only fueled my determination to succeed. Today, at Vision Mechatronics, we’ve achieved a 50/50 gender balance.
Through initiatives like the World Bank’s WePower, we’re mentoring young women to take leadership roles in renewable energy. I share my story so that others see what’s possible. Women bring unique perspectives, and the world needs their contributions to drive innovation.”
A Vision for India’s Clean Energy Future
What is your vision for India’s clean energy journey?
Dr. Gupta:
“I see a future where clean energy is accessible to everyone. Hybrid energy systems, grid-parity storage, and second-life battery solutions are the stepping stones to making this a reality.
India is emerging as a global leader in renewable energy, and I’m committed to contributing to this movement. Together, we can create a sustainable, energy-independent future for all.”
Advice for the Next Generation
What advice would you give to young professionals entering the renewable energy sector?
Dr. Gupta:
“The future is renewable. My advice:
- Stay curious and keep learning.
- Build a strong network—it’s invaluable.
- Never let challenges deter you.
Believe in your vision, stay resilient, and remember that your work can make a real difference.”
