Delhi Government Unveils Bold Measures to Tackle Air Pollution and Boost EV Adoption

Delhi EV charging infrastructure expansion

April 4th, 2025

Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a series of bold initiatives aimed at tackling air pollution and accelerating electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the capital. These measures respond to a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report that highlighted gaps in Delhi’s pollution control systems.

Stricter PUC Certification for Out-of-State Vehicles

To curb vehicular emissions, the government will implement a new policy for issuing Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates to vehicles registered outside Delhi. This policy aims to ensure compliance with emission norms and reduce pollution caused by non-local vehicles.

“These steps are crucial in strengthening Delhi’s fight against pollution, ensuring stricter enforcement and better infrastructure,” said CM Gupta during her assembly address.

Expanding EV Charging Infrastructure

The government plans to establish 48,000 EV charging points across Delhi by 2026, making EV adoption more convenient for residents. This includes:

  • 18,000 government-operated charging stations
  • 30,000 semi-private charging points

This expansion is expected to significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels while supporting the city’s growing EV ecosystem.

Enhancing Pollution Monitoring Systems

Six new air quality monitoring centres will be set up across Delhi to provide real-time data on pollution levels. These centres will help authorities take timely action against rising emissions and improve enforcement mechanisms.

Eco-Park for Sustainable Waste Management

The government also plans to establish an eco-park dedicated to processing electronic waste. This initiative aims to address pollution caused by improper disposal practices while promoting sustainable waste management solutions.

A Holistic Approach to Cleaner Air

These measures represent a multi-pronged strategy to tackle air pollution in Delhi. By tightening regulatory oversight, expanding EV infrastructure, and improving monitoring systems, the government is taking significant steps toward ensuring cleaner air and sustainable urban mobility for its residents.
