Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland is evaluating an electric vehicle battery manufacturing project in Bhandara, Maharashtra, with a potential investment of Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore, according to a report by The Times of India citing Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
EV Battery Plant Could Drive Major Investment
The proposed project is part of Ashok Leyland’s potential industrial expansion in the Vidarbha region. Gadkari highlighted the scale of investment the project could bring if the company moves ahead with the plan.
Speaking at an event in Nagpur, the minister said the project could significantly increase industrial capital expenditure in the region.

Gadkari also outlined Vidarbha’s logistics and infrastructure advantages while encouraging automotive manufacturers to establish operations in the region.
The minister pointed to the availability of industrial labour, improving multimodal connectivity and an operational dry port that can support direct freight exports.
He also highlighted ongoing large-scale automotive investments in the region, including Mahindra’s reported Rs 15,000 crore manufacturing project.
Push for EV and Export Infrastructure
A large-scale battery manufacturing facility could potentially support the development of a broader EV supply chain in Maharashtra, while proximity to logistics infrastructure could facilitate movement of components and finished products.
Gadkari further urged manufacturers to establish corporate and operational functions in Nagpur, offering government support for investments in the region.
If Ashok Leyland proceeds with the Bhandara project, it could mark a significant addition to India’s growing electric mobility and battery manufacturing ecosystem.
