Nationwide Training Initiative for EV Technicians by Maruti Suzuki

Skill Development for the EV Future

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has launched a major skill development program focused on electric and hybrid vehicle technology. This initiative will run across 130 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in 24 states and four union territories, aiming to train over 4,100 students every year.

The company is investing Rs 3.9 crore in this program under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. The first group of trained students is expected to enter the workforce by September 2025.

Bridging the Skills Gap in EV Servicing

One of the biggest challenges in India’s electric vehicle (EV) journey is the lack of skilled technicians. Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer for Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, pointed out that many customers still have low confidence in after-sales support for EVs.

To address this issue, Maruti Suzuki plans to expand its service network from 100 to 1,000 cities. It will also upgrade over 1,500 workshops to handle battery-powered electric vehicles.

Practical Training with a Strong Curriculum

The program is designed for second-year ITI students and offers both theory and hands-on training. The curriculum covers:

  • Basics of EV and hybrid vehicle systems
  • High-voltage safety procedures
  • How to use special tools and machines
  • Best methods for diagnostics and maintenance

In addition, the company is also training instructors and providing equipment to all the ITIs involved in the program.

Open Career Options in the Auto Industry

Importantly, students who complete the course can work with any car brand, not just Maruti Suzuki. This approach supports the entire EV industry by preparing technicians for all types of electric and strong hybrid vehicles.

Supporting India’s Green Goals

India has set bold targets for reducing carbon emissions. Although the government has introduced programs like the National Electric Mobility Mission and PLI incentives, there is still a shortage of trained EV professionals.

Maruti Suzuki’s training initiative directly supports these efforts and helps the industry move closer to clean mobility targets and meet future emission norms.

Expanding Opportunities Beyond Big Cities

At present, most EV service centers are located in major urban areas. This program aims to change that by spreading skills and service capability to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. This move is expected to help boost EV adoption in smaller towns and expand India’s green mobility footprint.
