Online travel platform EaseMyTrip is making a surprising pivot into sustainable transportation, announcing a ₹200 crore investment in electric bus manufacturing in Madhya Pradesh during the state’s Global Investors Summit.
The company, better known for flight and hotel bookings, plans to roll out 500 electric buses across Madhya Pradesh by the end of 2025, with ambitious targets to double that number in 2026. The first buses are expected to hit roads as early as August this year.
“We will be deputing a lot of buses in Madhya Pradesh and are also looking to establish a bus manufacturing plant here,” announced Rikant Pittie, CEO of EaseMyTrip, during the summit in Bhopal.
From Travel Bookings to Bus Manufacturing
This strategic diversification comes through EaseMyTrip’s wholly-owned subsidiaries YoloBus and Easy Green Mobility, which have already secured a tender to introduce electric buses in Sagar and other cities across Madhya Pradesh.
The company has received board approval for the investment and plans to establish a dedicated manufacturing facility within the state, aligning with India’s burgeoning electric vehicle industry currently valued at USD 3 billion and growing at an impressive 18% CAGR.
Embracing ‘Make in India’
Pittie emphasized the company’s commitment to domestic manufacturing, stating, “We are completely making an India company. And we believe that in India, there is a lot of scope of manufacturing. And that is what we are targeting.”
This initiative represents a significant expansion beyond EaseMyTrip’s core travel business, potentially positioning the company as a key player in India’s green mobility revolution.
While specific details about expansion to additional cities remain under wraps, Pittie confirmed that tenders have already been filed and will be announced “in due course.”
Industry analysts view this move as part of a growing trend of digital companies diversifying into sustainable infrastructure projects, particularly as India pushes toward electric mobility adoption across public transportation networks.
The investment comes at a time when both central and state governments are actively encouraging private sector participation in developing green transportation infrastructure, with electric buses seen as a crucial component in reducing urban pollution and dependence on fossil fuels.
