India’s First In-House Cell-to-Vehicle Manufacturing Milestone
Ola Electric has commenced deliveries of its S1 Pro+ (5.2 kWh) electric scooter powered by its own 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack. The announcement marks the company as the first in India to control both cell production and battery-pack assembly under one roof. The pack had earlier received certification from Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) under the latest AIS-156 Amendment 4 standard, clearing the way for mass rollout.
S1 Pro+: Performance, Range and Indigenous Engineering
The S1 Pro+ equipped with the 5.2 kWh Bharat Cell packs a 13 kW motor, accelerating from 0–40 km/h in 2.1 seconds. The scooter offers an IDC-certified range of 320 km in DIY mode. With dual ABS, disc brakes on both ends, and multiple ride modes, Ola aims to deliver performance, safety, and convenience now powered by home-grown battery technology.
Strategic Significance for India’s EV and Battery Ecosystem
By manufacturing battery cells domestically and integrating vertically, Ola Electric reduces reliance on imported cells a major cost and supply-chain bottleneck for Indian EV makers. This step enhances supply-chain resilience, supports local manufacturing growth, and could lead to lower costs for consumers as production scales.
The in-house cell-to-vehicle model could set a precedent for other Indian EV makers and accelerate the maturation of India’s EV supply chain. It supports national goals of localization, energy security and “Make in India” for clean mobility.
