Matter Motor Works has been awarded the Best Patent Portfolio (2020–2025) at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Industrial Intellectual Property Awards 2025, recognising its contribution to original engineering and sustained intellectual property creation. The company was also named among the Top 30 IP-Driven Organisations in India for innovation over the last five years.
Strong patent pipeline across EV technologies
Matter Motor Works has filed over 400 patent applications, with 96 patents granted to date, and expects to cross the 100-granted-patent milestone soon. The recognition reflects the company’s emphasis on developing proprietary technologies rather than relying on licensed or adapted solutions.
The company’s intellectual property portfolio covers critical EV systems and advanced manufacturing processes designed specifically for Indian operating conditions. These include powertrain cooling technologies for high thermal loads, advanced gearbox systems, onboard charging solutions, battery management systems, and automation-driven manufacturing innovations.
Engineering behind the AERA electric motorcycle
Several of Matter’s patented technologies support its flagship product, the AERA 5000+, India’s first geared electric motorcycle. Notably, its gearbox innovation enabled the world’s first electric motorcycle with a manual transmission, addressing rider engagement while retaining electric drivetrain efficiency.
The company’s IP strategy also supports future product development and manufacturing scalability, aligning technology creation with long-term product and business goals.
Leadership perspective on innovation-led growth
Matter Motor Works said this is its second consecutive recognition by CII, following an IP award in 2024. Founder and Group CEO Mohal Lalbhai highlighted the company’s focus on engineering solutions grounded in real Indian road and climate conditions. Founders Kumar Prasad Telikepalli and Arun Pratap Singh noted that Matter’s IP journey prioritises real-world engineering challenges and scalable solutions rather than patent volumes alone.
Matter Motor Works continues to expand its electric mobility portfolio while strengthening its in-house intellectual property base through original design, manufacturability, and India-first engineering.
