JSW Greentech has entered India’s electric commercial vehicle market with the launch of Ampstar, an EV brand focused initially on heavy trucks and buses. The company showcased a 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer and an electric bus in Mumbai, with commercial production at its Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant expected to begin within 30 days.

15,000-Unit Annual Capacity

The 90-acre greenfield facility will have an annual capacity of 15,000 electric vehicles, comprising 10,000 buses and 5,000 trucks.

  • Production target for FY2026-27: 500-1,000 vehicles
  • Initial mix: around 60% trucks and 40% buses
  • First-phase investment: about ₹2,500 crore
  • Long-term ambition: 100,000 electric truck capacity by 2030

55-Tonne Trucks Lead the Charge

Ampstar will initially focus on 55-tonne electric tractor-trailers, targeting steel, cement, mining and port operations. Battery configurations will range from 282kWh to 500kWh, with fixed and swappable battery options.

JSW plans to deploy its first 100 battery-swapping electric trucks between its Vijayanagar steel plant and cement facility at Nandyal from next month.

Electric Buses and Flexible Ownership

The Ampstar bus portfolio will span 7-18 metres, covering staff transport, city services, school transportation and airport applications.

The company will also offer cost-per-kilometre, wet-lease and battery-as-a-service models, alongside conventional vehicle sales.

Integrated EV Manufacturing

The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar facility will integrate vehicle assembly, bus body building, cabin manufacturing and battery-pack production. Battery cells will initially be imported, while JSW aims to achieve around 50% truck localisation within six months.

The company expects electric trucks to deliver a 15-20% total cost of ownership advantage, depending on usage and configuration.
