India’s electric vehicle market recorded strong retail growth in September 2026, with electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger vehicles posting significant year-on-year gains, according to FADA data compiled from 1,468 RTOs.
EV Retail Crosses 3.33 Lakh Units
Total EV retail across four categories reached 333,634 units in September. Key segment volumes included:
- Electric 2-wheelers: 207,314 units
- Electric 3-wheelers: 86,024 units
- Electric passenger vehicles: 36,108 units
- Electric commercial vehicles: 4,188 units
Electric two-wheelers led the market, growing 88.67% YoY and 13.16% MoM.
Electric 2-Wheelers Lead the Charge
Electric two-wheeler penetration increased to 11.6%, compared with 10.7% in August and 8.2% a year earlier.
TVS Motor led the segment with 54,037 units, followed by Bajaj Auto with 48,429 and Ather Energy with 30,533 units. Hero MotoCorp recorded 24,321 units, while Ola Electric posted 13,451 units.
Electric 3-Wheelers Maintain Strong Momentum
Electric three-wheeler retail rose 40.03% YoY to 86,024 units. EV penetration stood at 64.9%, highlighting the segment’s continued shift towards electrification.
Bajaj Auto led individual manufacturers with 15,109 units, followed closely by Mahindra Group at 14,716 units.
Passenger EV Sales Nearly Double
Electric passenger vehicle retail surged 94.56% YoY to 36,108 units. EV penetration reached 8.5% of passenger vehicle retail.
Tata Motors led with 14,791 units, followed by Mahindra at 7,780 and JSW MG Motor India at 5,242 units.
Commercial EVs See Monthly Dip
Electric commercial vehicle retail declined 10.93% MoM to 4,188 units but remained up 158.2% YoY. Tata Motors led with 1,275 units, while Euler Motors recorded 1,064 units.
Overall, September data highlights accelerating EV adoption across India, particularly in two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger vehicles.
