The Government of India will sanction 30 additional hydrogen-powered trucks and buses as part of its ongoing Hydrogen Mission pilot initiative. The expansion builds on earlier demonstration projects designed to test hydrogen-based propulsion technologies in heavy commercial vehicles across real-world operating conditions.
The decision reinforces policy support for hydrogen as a long-term decarbonisation pathway for freight and public transport segments.
Expanding Hydrogen Vehicle Pilot Deployment
The additional trucks and buses will be deployed under pilot frameworks to assess performance, durability, and operational feasibility. Hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles are being evaluated for their suitability in long-haul and heavy-duty applications, where battery-electric alternatives may face range or payload constraints.
By scaling pilot volumes, authorities aim to gather broader data sets and refine regulatory, safety, and infrastructure planning requirements.
Strengthening India’s Clean Commercial Mobility Strategy
The expanded sanction under the Hydrogen Mission underscores India’s multi-technology approach to transport decarbonisation. While battery electric vehicles dominate urban segments, hydrogen solutions are being explored for high-energy-demand use cases.
Increasing pilot deployments supports ecosystem development, including hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and refuelling infrastructure key components required for eventual commercial rollout.
