Strategic MoU for advanced battery packs

Samsung SDI and KG Mobility (KGM) have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop and commercialize next-generation electric vehicle battery packs designed for future EV platforms. The agreement, signed in Seoul by senior executives from both organisations, marks the beginning of a strategic collaboration focused on high-performance pack technology that leverages Samsung SDI’s cylindrical cell expertise.

Under the partnership, the companies will work closely on battery pack design, development, testing and production planning to integrate Samsung SDI’s 46 mm cylindrical NCA cells into KGM’s next-generation electric vehicles. These cells are engineered to deliver high energy density and fast-charging performance, while incorporating proprietary silicon-carbon nanocomposite (SCN) anode materials that reduce swelling, boost energy density and extend lifespan without compromising safety.

Technology roadmap and performance gains

Samsung SDI’s 46 mm battery format is notable for its optimized internal resistance and thermal management, which improve current flow and dissipate heat more effectively—factors essential for high-output EV applications. With high-nickel NCA cathode chemistry and advanced anode materials, the batteries aim to support longer driving ranges and rapid charge cycles suitable for modern EV use cases.

The collaboration will also include joint technical exchanges, global market strategy planning and long-term R&D cooperation to explore emerging battery technologies that could power future EV generations. Industry observers see such OEM-cell maker partnerships as vital to compress development cycles and enhance product-market fit for competitive EV launches.

Implications for EV supply chain competitiveness

For Samsung SDI, the KGM partnership strengthens its position in the global EV battery ecosystem by anchoring advanced pack development with an automotive OEM. For KG Mobility, access to cutting-edge battery tech accelerates its EV roadmap while enhancing competitiveness against larger global players.
